A Short Doc: Women and Esports
How Storytelling and Leadership Skills Are Honed Behind the Camera
During my third year of University, I was tasked with creating a short documentary with my peers. I decided to pitch the idea that integrated my interests in gaming and Twitch streaming. My team and I all agreed we wanted to highlight women in esports.
How I Succeed In My Role As A Director 🎬
Storytelling: I realized that my storytelling skills would be essential to making the documentary a success. I began researching and interviewing women involved in the esports or gaming industry and learning about their experiences and challenges. I knew that their stories would be the heart of the documentary.
Leadership: Being a director for this project allowed me to lead a team of collaborators, including an editor, videographer, producer and more. I needed to ensure everyone was on the same page and working towards the same goal. I also wanted to make sure that my peer’s ideas and feedback were also being considered.
Attention to detail: When creating a high-quality project, I paid close attention to lighting, camera angles, and sound quality, knowing that even the smallest details could make a big difference in the final product. I made sure changes were effectively communicated with my team.
Time management: The most challenging aspect of the project was having a student schedule. I had to manage my time effectively by using tools such as Notion and Google Drive to organize and carefully plan interviews, filming and editing. With all these tools, I was able to stay on track and deliver a finished product that I was proud of.
In the end, these skills all came together to create a well-done project that shed light on an important issue about the reality of being a woman in a male-dominated industry. My group and I could share these women's stories, highlighting their experiences and inspiring others.
